Our service is for all those who are bereaved no matter their age or the circumstance of the death or the relationship to the death ie. Long term paid carers also fit the bill too. We also support those who are experiencing and are impacted upon by a life limiting condition such as the cancers or neurological conditions.
We provide the service to everyone in the old south west durham health trust ie. Up teesdale, up weardale, from bishop over to the trimdons, from bishop to croxdale on the edge of durham, over to tow law and a few villages on the way to lanchester, from bishop to merrybent, along our side of the A66 from almost Richmond up to almost appleby but not including!! A very large area!!
We offer counselling and support here at the hospice, in peoples homes, schools, colleges, and anywhere that the client can get to and feels safe even eg. Morrisons!! And, anybody can someone as long as they have their permission. So that means self referral is fine too.
We also offer education about bereavement and loss and try to help schools as well as families to manage prognoses of terminal conditions of a relative, friend etc. We go into schools to assist them in their work with the children and to help them be aware of essential things when teaching either bereaved or children who experiencing the life limiting illness of someone they love. We also are trying to persuade schools to produce bereavement policies around loss and bereavement but at present don’t have any takers though we are going to do some training (3 hours) on this for schools in the near future.
We have developed a 3 hour training for schools around teenagers and younger children for them to access, either in the school setting, or here at the hospice. And, for those who want it we run a two day course on bereavement and loss (cost £50.00 including lunch). This will be held on October 16th and 17th, 2015. This is open to anybody who wants to come.
